In mid-May, Jayne Andrew, from Aylsham Heritage Centre asked the community shed if we could create an outdoor game which they could use at various public events which would attract interest and fun!

The game that Jayne suggested was a large version of ‘connect four’, which uses a grid into which two players take turns to connect four of their coloured counters in a continuous line, whilst blocking the opponent from doing the same with their coloured counters.

When we started, I don’t think we really appreciated the work involved in making that many large (roughly 110mm) holes in 12mm think plywood, bearing in mind that the grid needed to be seen from two sides – just ask Derek! Then, of course, you have to make enough, slightly larger discs to act as the counters.

Overall though, it was really enjoyable work making the game and seeing it all come together in time to be used by the Heritage Centre at the Aylsham Show, where they and ourselves were guests at the Aylsham Care Trust’s marquee.
